How Deck Contractors Prepare Your Deck for Winter

The winds and rains of winter can wreak havoc on your deck. Instead of dealing with the damage after it happens, your deck contractors offer solutions to prevent problems from developing in the first place. Your deck contractors offer these key services for helping to protect your deck.

Cleaning
You may be able to clean your deck yourself. Cleaning the deck helps to get rid of dirt, dust and other contaminants that can scratch or otherwise harm the deck's finish. Begin by removing all furniture and other items from the deck. Use a soft-bristled outdoor broom to thoroughly sweep the deck. You can then use your garden hose and a nozzle to wash the deck. If there is stubborn dirt or there are stains left behind on the deck, consider using a biodegradable cleaning product. Your deck contractors can recommend a product to clean your wooden deck.

Sealants
Decks need to have sealants applied to all of their exposed surfaces. The sealants prevent moisture from getting into the wood and causing damage. Sealants can be clear or they can have pigments added. Different types of wood require different formulations of sealants, and your deck contractors know which types of products work best on your deck. Sealants should be applied on a dry day under moderate humidity conditions when the temperature is at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The sealant will need about 24 hours to dry and cure.

If you don’t have the experience to do any of these jobs competently, know that you can always leave the job in the hands of a professional deck service.
